Hmmmm......not sure if I agree with this:
The TV should know that you've come in and turn on to your favorite show.
But I do like the idea of better inter-connected devices.

Here is an example of why I think tablets are going to fade quite a bit. Taking a look at the specs on this, I have to ask why, exactly, a tablet would be a solid option. Eventually, these will have touch screens, too. So priced about the same you will have a comfort of keyboard and stand-alone ability with about the same size as a pad. The other 1/2 of the equation is an app-store solution for desktops. It'll come.
